The Sudanese Community in East London believes that respecting individuals’ privacy and protecting their personal information is a fundamental part of its social and ethical responsibilities, as well as a key principle of good governance in charitable and voluntary work.
As part of our commitment to the laws and regulations applicable in the United Kingdom, and to general data protection and privacy principles, we ensure that personal information belonging to members, volunteers, beneficiaries, donors, partners, and visitors is handled in a lawful, fair, transparent, and secure manner.
The community collects personal information only when there is a legitimate need to do so and for clear and specific purposes, such as managing memberships, communicating with members, organizing community activities and programs, managing volunteering efforts, providing services and support, managing donations, and fulfilling legal and regulatory obligations.
We do not use personal information for purposes beyond the purpose for which it was collected unless such use is legally permitted or there is an appropriate lawful basis for doing so.
We also follow the principle of data minimization, meaning that we only request and retain information that is genuinely necessary. We ensure that information remains accurate and updated and that it is not retained for longer than required.
The community gives special attention to information that may be considered sensitive or subject to additional legal protection, particularly information related to health, ethnic background, religious beliefs, or other specially protected data. Such information is only collected or used when there is a clear necessity and an appropriate lawful basis.
The community implements appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect information from unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or unlawful disclosure. We also work to raise awareness among board members, employees, and volunteers about their responsibilities regarding privacy and data protection.
Personal information is not shared with third parties unless it is necessary and lawful, required by legal obligations, based on a legitimate interest, or supported by another lawful basis.
We respect individuals’ rights regarding their personal data, including the right to understand how their information is used, request access to it, request corrections, and exercise other rights granted by applicable laws. Privacy information should always be clear, accessible, and understandable for individuals.
The community is committed to reviewing its privacy policy and data protection procedures regularly and updating them whenever legal, regulatory, or operational changes affect the way information is collected, used, or stored.
We do not view data protection as merely an administrative procedure, but rather as an essential part of the trust that connects the community with its members, beneficiaries, volunteers, partners, donors, and the local community.
The community is committed to the principles of:
Transparency, necessity, data minimization, security, accountability, and respect for individuals’ rights.
